Why Focus on Flexibility?

Flexibility is key to a healthier, more active life. It’s not just about wellness – it’s about reducing discomfort in your daily life. Regular stretching improves muscle recovery, increases range of motion, and promotes better circulation. It’s also a stress reliever! Whether you’re an athlete or simply looking to make everyday movements easier and injury-free, flexibility is your ally. As you age, it also plays a vital role in maintaining mobility and independence.

Multiple studies have shown benefits from assisted stretching, specifically on improving range of motion. Overall, range of motion assesses how well a joint or limb can move and is generally measured in degrees of movement. Range of motion is an important indicator of proper body mechanics and overall musculoskeletal function. Lack of range of motion can indicate that one currently has an injury or that they are at risk to sustain a future injury. Muscle Flexibility is an important component that influences range of motion and is most commonly and effectively addressed through stretching protocols. Specifically, research has shown proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) has shown to be the best type of stretching for increasing range of motion due to its physiological mechanisms.

An added benefit of stretching that might not be recognized, is that stretching is scientific. We have to change our viewpoint of stretching (ie touch my toes for 10 seconds before the race or only stretch when I feel discomfort). As shown, there are many benefits of adding a consistent assisted stretching routine to your daily activities. At StretchLab, we are proud to implement research back data in our training and it reflects in our service; specifically utilizing PNF stretching with members and taking a customized stretching approach.

Over the course of time, we tend to do repetitive activities. At first glance, we don’t think much of it, but overtime this precipitates tension in our muscles. From another viewpoint, it is well known that stress tends to create tension build-up throughout our body and muscles. With the “always on” world that we live in, it is beneficial to implement a wellness routine. Through the physiological mechanisms of stretching, there is a benefit in decreasing tension in muscles caused by stress.

A great first start to creating a stretching protocol is considering your current flexibility. Are there specific movements that feel restricted? Do you experience discomfort during certain activities? Your goals might range from achieving deeper stretches to simply feeling more comfortable in your daily routine. Remember, every small step towards increased flexibility is a victory. It’s about personal progress, not perfection.

Quick Tips:
• Target Specific Areas:
Identify tight or restricted areas in your body. Set goals to improve flexibility in these specific regions.
• Small Daily Goals: Establish small, daily objectives like incorporating a 5-minute stretch routine every morning or evening.
• Monitor Progress: Keep a simple log of your stretching routines and any improvements in comfort or flexibility, to track and celebrate your progress.
