Walk to End Alzheimer’s is World’s Largest Event Dedicated to Alzheimer’s Care, Support, and Research
The Alzheimer’s Association is inviting North Alabama residents to join the fight to end Alzheimer’s by participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s® on Saturday, Oct. 1 at Big Spring Park East, 200 Church St SW, Huntsville, AL 35801.
On Walk day, participants honor those affected by Alzheimer’s with the poignant Promise Garden ceremony — a mission-focused experience that signifies our solidarity in the fight against the disease. The colors of the Promise Garden flowers represent people’s connection to Alzheimer’s — their personal reasons to end the disease.
“We are looking forward to being in-person again for this year’s walk,” says Jessica Miller, Executive Director of the Alabama Alzheimer’s Association. “It is a wonderful opportunity for the community to come together to honor those living with Alzheimer’s and dementia and to support all those serving as caregivers. Raising awareness and funds to support educational programs, support groups, and research is a great way to give back.”
While plans are moving forward to host the North Alabama Walk in person, the health and safety of participants, staff and volunteers remain the top priorities. The Alzheimer’s Association will continue to closely monitor CDC, state and local guidelines to ensure Walk events adhere to the latest recommendations.
More than 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease – a leading cause of death in the United States. Additionally, more than 11 million family members and friends provide care to people living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias.
In Alabama alone, there are more than 96,000 people living with the disease and an estimated 211,000 family members and friends serving as caregivers.
Encourage family and friends to walk to honor a loved one and join the hundreds of North Alabama resident who will walk on Oct. 1. To register and receive the latest updates on this year’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s, visit alz.org/walk.
In addition, the Alzheimer’s Association Alabama Chapter offers dozens of educational programs all year long as well as area support groups. All programs are free and virtual. To learn more, follow us on Facebook at @endalzal.
