Home is really where our hearts are, especially over the past 18 months. For this reason, home remodeling has become something most homeowners are looking into having done.
There are a lot of do-it-yourself people who have the skillset to complete most of the tasks necessary during a remodel, but one area that a lot of homeowners do not spend enough time on before beginning the remodel is the actual design of the space. If you are about to undertake a significant remodel that will be a major financial and/or physical investment, and you are not confident with your design skills, seek help from a professional designer. This initial investment can make the difference in the space of your dreams or become your worst nightmare.
The most important characteristic you want in a designer is someone who knows what questions to ask and really listens to you. They need to have a conversation with you to find out what you hope to accomplish out of the remodel, what are the pain points that need to be fixed in your current space and what is the budget. Yes, you are hiring them to help you make design decisions but it is important that they are designing to your wants, needs and tastes. We all may not be “designers” but we all have our own tastes and preferences. Spend time looking through the past work of the designer and notice if they captured the tastes of the individual customer or does every project looking the same. The design needs to reflect you, not the designer.
A good designer should spend a large amount of the design time choosing the materials and finishes based on conversations they have had with you and with your budget in mind. It is important that the materials and finishes that are chosen by the designer work within the budget or you will have a design that you love but cannot afford.
One of the best ways to make sure that the design of the space is exactly what you are looking for is for the designer to provide a complete presentation that includes everything from the selection of cabinets, countertops, lighting, tile, flooring, wall colors and any other materials and finishes that will be used in the space. Another very important aspect of the design is being able to see the space in a true setting such as what a 3D rendering program will provide. It is not usual for there to be several design reviews before a final design is completed.
