Things Every New RV Owner Should Know

by Kelsi Nuss Web Director Johnston RV Center

Social distancing in the days of COVID-19 has heavily impacted the way we travel, leading more people than ever to choose RVs as their preferred way to see the world. At our stores, we’ve talked to an increasing number of new RVers who want to know how to make the best of their camping journeys and what tips we have for those just starting out. Here are 4 things every new RV owner should know as they take the exciting plunge into RV ownership.

1. Always perform a pre-trip checklist.

Before every trip you take with your RV, check tire pressure and condition of all tires including the spare tire. Plug your camper up and ensure all appliances, fixtures, faucets, and amenities are operational the day before you leave. Make sure all your necessary items are packed securely, and double check that your route is acceptable for traveling with your type of RV (looking at you especially, fifth wheel and A class motorhome owners).

2. Keep a small toolkit on hand.

A supply of tools regularly used around the house (hammer, screwdriver set, power drill, socket set, wrenches, pliers, and drill bits) stored in your camper can go a long way in alleviating stress caused by small breakages.

3. Do not neglect your maintenance obligations.

Every vehicle, no matter if it’s an RV or an automobile, has maintenance requirements. Familiarize yourself with the requirements laid out by the manufacturer. Make it a habit to perform those maintenance items per the timeline given. This is the best way to extend the health and maximize the usability of your camper.

4. Learn from experienced RVers.

RV vloggers and You Tubers can offer a wealth of knowledge driven by their experiences over the years. Tips and tricks, blunders to avoid, and even awesome campgrounds to stay in can be found with a quick YouTube search.

Don’t worry—every seasoned RV pro was once a newcomer. It may initially take some time, practice, and patience, but in the end, traveling freely and safely will be worth it. New RVers, you’re on your way to building lasting memories. Enjoy! And don’t forget, you’ve got a friend in Johnston RV Center, and we’re here to help however we can.
